Must visit the Lamp and Whistle and the Turks Head.Penzance town is easy to navigate and we found the buses a pleasant surprise for Cornwall and used them to get to Marazion and Mousehole... both lovely villages. St Michaels Mount was a bit to touristy for us. MUST MUST vist Perranunuthoe beach as recommended by the landlord of Lamp & Whistle and assisted by the bus driver

I have been using The Fountain for a long time, whenever I’ve visited my mom who lives a few minutes from The Fountain. The rooms are always clean, comfortable and well equipped with the basics of what you need. The staff have always been really friendly, helpful and welcoming and will happily cater to your needs should you need anything that they haven’t already provided. It has never occurred to me to stay anywhere else, because as the saying goes, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ I don’t think you’d find anywhere that cares about your comfort and your holiday experience more than this place does. The staff go out of their way to help make your stay as comfortable and as enjoyable as possible; you couldn’t really ask for more.

A very convenient option in Penzance at the top of the Causeway walking street. Quick access to the center and the action. Short stay car park immediately adjacent, however, the St Erbyns long stay lot just a few meters away is the better option for cars, being free from 4 PM - 9 AM. So parking is pretty easy. I'd give the location a "4.5" Room is clean and serviceable, reasonably basic, a classic inn room above a tavern with keyed access. Bar staff makes it easy to check in and out. Have a drink in the pub downstairs to round out your experience!

Our favorite seafood restaurant was Mackerel Sky, a 25 minute walk into Newlyn (or take a bus). There is a newer brewery down by the central "four corners" off of Market Jew called Men an Tol after the prehistoric site. Great owner, does classic British bitters and a couple of sours.

Nice clean, warm room with enough space. No problem with noise. Slept well. Location is slightly outside the centre but it's an easy walk. The main thing to be aware of is that they don't do breakfast (except for basic tea/coffee making in the room plus biscuits) so if you are a big breakfast person you will need a plan. There isn't a cafe very close by and they understandably don't allow food to be brought into the room and eaten.

There is free overnight parking from 16.00 to 09.00 the following morning in the adjacent car park, plus limited on-street parking.

My son and I enjoyed our five night very much. The staff were very friendly and helpful and made us feel right at home. The location is a short walk to Causewayhead which has a variety of shops and places to eat. Many more are just a short walk further. The Fountain Tavern was an excellent place to stay as our home base for visiting Penzance, St. Michael's Mount, and The Minack Theatre.

The train and bus station are next to each other but a bit of a walk uphill to The Fountain Tavern. Buses are inexpensive and easy to use and will get you all over Penzance and SW Cornwall.

I came home to Penzance because my father is seriously ill in hospital and I needed accommodation very near to the hospital he is in. The Fountain Tavern was the nearest. My room was clean and the en suite facilities were excellent. The staff were down to earth, empathetic and easy to talk to. A very nice man sorted out the radiator for me whilst I was there. The lady in shorts and t shirt was especially lovely to me at a very difficult time. Thank you.

The Granary in Causewayhead for nice vegan snack foods. The Leather shop in Causewayhead for fantastic made to measure belts. Saltrock in Market Jew Street if you need a cosy jumper. The Co-Op in Market Jew Street for good basic provisions.

Nice room for our four night stay. Well situated, clean, and easy to find.

Note it is above a pub. So expect pub noise. Was there during the week and generally quiet before 11pm. This is also a plus as you can have a nightcap on the way back. However if noise bothers you maybe not the place to stay.

The fountain tavern was a very welcoming place to stay for one night before a backpack hike on the coast path. We arrived late with the train from London and the staff was realy nice. Since they didn't serve dinner, they allowed us to use the table of the tavern to eat a takeaway meal. The room was confortable, and tea is offered.

good location at the top of the causeway, fair price, friendly, fairly basic amenities but OK. Not very well insulated against sound, the pub wasn’t a problem, but people in the next room were! If the accommodation isn’t full, I‘d recommend leaving a room empty between the occupied rooms. They did finally quieter down at midnight, otherwise I would have knocked on their door. Breakfast on Saturday smelt great, but unfortunately I‘d made other arrangements.

I arrived late, however the staff were incredibly patient and helpful in helping me check in. They even let me leave my luggage with them for the day after I'd checked out. The rooms were new, well-kept and clean, and the Tavern is only about a ten minute walk from the station. Overall, this is the best value accommodation you're going to find in Penzance and I highly recommend it!

I was only in Penzance for a day, however I really enjoyed walking the coastal path between Lelant and St Ives. You can take the train from Penzance to St Erth and change to platform 3 for the St Ives branch line. Make sure to check the timetables to ensure the train stops at Lelant (it is also a request stop, so you have to ask the conductor to stop the train there). However, if you manage to make it there, you're in for one of the most scenic coastal paths in the UK, starting from Lelant Church, and only about 2.5 miles to St Ives. Once you reach St Ives you can take the train back to St Erth, and then Penzance. There are really gorgeous clifftop views across the bays: I highly recommend it :)

We were very happy with our stay at Fountain. It gave us the opportunity to walk the historic streets of Penzance and enjoy the hospitality of the local people. The staff and some of the regulars in the bar gave us local travel tips which were very much appreciated.

A walk along the esplanade provides a choice of restaurants and some historical inns. The Coaster Bus will take you for a three hour tour of many Cornish villages and Lands End. A day pass allows you to hop on and off as you please.

Everything was done to make me feel comfortable. The facilities marking reflects that my tv wasn’t available to me as the channels hadn’t been tuned in. As a lone traveller that was quite important. I was horrified upon arrival as the stairs leading up to the rooms are almost vertical and I had heavy luggage which I had to deposit elsewhere (long stay car park). However, for the price it was clean, the quality of the furnishings in the room was good, eg good quality carpet, towels, thoughtful touches. The Ritz it ain't.

I only stayed the one night a Friday and Saturdays the tavern does excellent breakfasts from 9pm very friendly staff. Doesn't have a car park but a public one next door free from 4pm - 9am

Freindly welcome, nice clean common areas. Excellent quiet, clean and fresh room. Only stayed for one night but would happily have stayed longer. A very comfortable stay, with some lovely freiendly staff. I will be sure to stay there again the next time I'm in Penzance. Would highly recommend.

Conveniently placed a short walk from the harbour and the sea. This walk is down hill, through the town centre shops - or, past the old church. Which means of course, an up hill walk to get back. There are is a diverse range of eateries a short distance from this hotel. Some to be recommended, some perhaps not. In general, an ideal place to based yourself for a visit to this area.

We had a very nice 2 night stay in September The location is very good for a shot walk into town just 150yds before you come to other bars food places and shops and not much futher maybe 10 min from the fountain you can be at centre of promenade. Good location, walking wise the pub is at the top of a hill, where you are next to a lot of independent and interesting shops to look around. The quay is only is 10-15 minute walk away and there are plenty of places of to eat close by. Driving wise, there’s lots of options of pretty coastal towns nearby, we liked Mousehole in particular.

When I got in (late afternoon) it suddenly occurred to me that I was going to try sleeping above a TAVERN. There was raucous laughter and even singing. I don't drink, m'self. Ach, no ... I'm 68 and need my sleep. But as I listened to the revellers there was no meanness and much love and joy. Plus, they close the pub at 11, and half an hour later it was the sweetest calm you could want to sleep in. The staff were lovely to me and when I tipped one woman a pound she put it in the poor box. A poor box in a pub? Splendid. A bit far from the bus station, but the cab was cheap and without a suitcase the best parts of town were walkable.

The "Coaster" bus is well worth taking to Land's End and St. Ives. Buy a £5 day pass and jump on and off at will.

I had such a great stay here. Was travelling to Scilly on the early ferry. Chose this place for price and convenience and was very surprised at the warm welcome, standard of room and extra mile the hosts go to make you feel welcome and comfortable. My host got up extra early and has breakfast waiting which was extra special. I felt a little uneasy at first as it's a good old fashioned locals pub, but within minutes I felt like part of the family. If I could rate I would ... I shall be back.

The Fountain Tavern was fabulous. Room was comfortable, clean, quiet, comfortable bed and nice shower. We had lots of good restaurant choices in walking distance. Also easy to walk to whatever we wanted to see or to the bus station for day trips. Sarah was so friendly and accommodating. Would definitely stay there again!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay of 7 nights and would definitely like to return. The staff were wonderful and friendly. The husband and wife managers were so kind and helpful and kindly upgraded us to allow more room for my mobility issues. The family room was absolutely lovely with luxurious bathroom and shower. Penzance is a wonderful place with superb bus service. Great local fish and chips Weds to Saturday and of course great local pasties. Wonderful.

All the staff were lovely. Our hostess was brilliant and friendly. The breakfast was huge, set us up for our long,long drive North. Certainly would have no hesitation in recommending. Bed room big and clean, tea and coffee available. Five star plus

Be aware they don't have their own car park, but in very close proximity there are public carparks free from 4pm to 9am following morning. So you have time to eat and and get on your way before charges start.

When I arrived we were greeted with a smile, Sarah and Raymond where perfect hosts! nothing was to much trouble, felt at home from day one, the room was comfortable, clean ,slept well after a day of activities with my son 😊, we booked breakfast, which was cooked perfectly by Sarah, set us up for the day and great value for money, the fountain is a great location just far enough out of the centre to but not to far to avoid the huddle and bustle, I will definitely be returning in the future loved penzence, even my son 14yrs old hard to please loved every minute of the holiday and hotel, would recommend staying here for long or short visit A big thank you to all the staff the fountain great value 😊😊😊😊

Ray and Sarah welcomed us with open arms. Rooms were great. Do not eat the full English breakfast cooked by Sarah if you do not want to gain weight. Absolutely amazing. Be prepared to socialise as in the front bar you are welcomed by the locals. We will definately stay again when next in Penzance.

Make sure your stay includes a Sunday as they serve the best roast in all of Cornwall cooked of course by Ray and Sarah. If you come by train it is only a £4 taxi ride or if you are fit and prefer to walk the inclines by all means do as it is definately worth it.

The town is short of chef’s and wait staff and it is a huge challenge to find a restaurant. Make a booking early in the day or arrive before 6pm

If you want very fresh Fish and Chips the local chippy is 2 minutes away along with a fabulous Indian and Chinese takeaways. The Smugglars cafe, a further 2 minutes away, serves a very full breakfast very reasonably priced. Local Artisan bakery a must with lots of other shops to explore.

I stayed here with my husband and we had a fantastic 2-night stay at the Fountain Tavern, the service was second to none. Sarah and Evonne were particularly amazing and a good laugh! They were welcoming and gave us helpful advice on how to get around the area. The Fountain Tavern is in a great location (walking distance from the station) and in our package we were given breakfast (continental + egg/bacon rolls + a hot drink) which was nice. With the restaurant being closed at the moment we were able to bring a takeaway back late one evening and were given plates, glasses etc, the hosts were really happy to make sure we were comfortable! We think that the staff and venue exceeded our expectations for the cost and we're looking forward to returning when we're back in Cornwall! We'd 100% recommend to anyone considering booking!

The Fountain Tavern is run by a lovely family who are very kind and friendly, and they welcomed me warmly. The room was great, very clean, with ensuite bathroom and included everything - TV, hairdryer, tea/coffee, kettle etc. Yvonne and Sarah were very flexible and always willing to please, regarding my dietary requirements. I have several food intolerances, but they provided me with a delicious breakfast every day, according to my needs. All in all, I was very happy and satisfied at the Fountain Tavern.

There are plenty of good take-aways at walking distance from the Fountain Tavern. Yvonne and her family always let me use a table downstairs to eat my take away, and they provided plates and cutlery. Penzance is a very interesting town, and if you like art, Penlee House is a must. Lovely beach, and very well located with good bus and train service. Easy to visit other places from Penzance, such as St Ives, Mousehole, Newlyn, Landsend etc.

We booked a 2 night stay at The Fountain Tavern last minute and we are so glad we chose to stay here. On arrival we met Sarah and later on Ray, the owner’s. They couldn’t be more welcoming and Sarah showed us up to our room and asked what time we would like breakfast the following morning. The room was a double with an en-suite and was spacious, clean and had plenty of storage. We went downstairs to enjoy a couple of drinks in the bar, which has a good selection of beers and a great selection of spirits - in particular gin and rum - where we then met Ray. Ray is Cornish through and through and is a one man travel guide who told us about all the little coves and villages that were worth stopping at, which we then did the following day. As well as Ray and Sarah we met Yvonne, another friendly and warm member of staff who couldn’t do enough for you. The Tavern is in a great location and only a 2-3 minute walk into the centre of Penzance and there is also a pay and display car park next door, which is free between 1600-0900 hrs daily although in your room there are details to arrange off road parking. All in all a wonderful stay in Cornwall made all the more special due to Sarah, Ray and Yvonne and our stay at The Fountain Tavern.
